ABSTRACT

The Integrated Curriculum Model (ICM) represents a union of multiple curricular approaches used to design and implement strategies for instruction. The ICM organizes these features into one package, allowing gifted learners and others to experience a more integrated pattern of learning. This integrated approach also reflects two fundamental findings of recent research on learning. The ICM thus is a framework to organize subject matter, with the content core as a basis for modification and integration. Theoretical support for the ICM comes primarily from learning theory and development. Principles derived from professional development research guide the professional development approaches employed in working with the ICM. Recent guides for using the new language arts, math, and science standards in classrooms with gifted learners describe tasks differentiated for gifted learners through the incorporation of emphases noted in the ICM model. Instructional leadership is critical for successful implementation of the ICM.
