ABSTRACT

The first coherent views on the relationship between psychological processes and structures of the brain were put forward more than one hundred and fifty years ago. Since that time a debate has raged between theorists who believed that specific psychological functions are regulated by specific areas of the brain (the localization view), and researchers who considered that many individual structures of the brain are of equal importance in the mediation of behavioural attributes (holistic view).
