ABSTRACT

Russian Revolution is the collective term for a pair of revolutions in Russia in 1917, which dismantled the Tsarist autocracy and led to the eventual rise of the Soviet Union. The War-Revolutionary Committee were evidently convinced that the Government were doing nothing, and indeed were powerless to check the uprising; but they knew that success could only be made certain by deliberate and skilful preparation. The Petrograd Soviet passed a vote of noconfidence in the Provisional Government, and the Executive Committee discussed the formation of an independent Soviet revolutionary staff. On October 25th a large military meeting was held at the Smolny Institute, comprising representatives of the northern district, and all the speakers demanded that the Government be overthrown and that power be transferred to the Soviets. On October 26th the soldier's section of the Soviet approved the project, and on October 29th the Soviet confirmed it in a plenary session.
