ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses questions that were asked in relation to ownership (e.g. 'who owns the word meaning?'), identity (e.g. 'who is a native speaker?') and interculturality ('how do we do cultural and linguistic identifications?'). It considers the implications for tandem learning and beyond. To understand interculturality in the context of tandem learning, research approaches have been needed from both acquisition metaphor (AM) and participation metaphor (PM) perspectives. Examples were given of native English and native Spanish students' understandings of the meaning of words through the use of word associations. Interlocutors gave their associations with the word under discussion both before and after the conversations as an aid to the conversation as well as a way of considering change after the conversations. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
