ABSTRACT
Readers of the preceding chapter, as well as viewers of the original 60 Minutes segment, will see for themselves that this televised program is at once entertaining, apparently informative, and deeply intriguing. It includes language produced by American speakers of English, as well as by Finnish speakers of English; it includes characterizations in American English of Finns and Finland; it also includes characterizations by Finnish English speakers of Finns and Americans; even though most expressions in the document are in English, throughout there are occasional statements in Finnish that are written (like street signs or the sign about selecting dance partners), sung (e.g., lines 274-275), or spoken (e.g., line 339); to these linguistic dynamics are added rich visual landscapes of people in their routine city life in Helsinki, in special festive occasions in other Finnish cities, in the countryside, and in tango halls, as well as visual images from a variety of other scenes including Finnish Lapland. Close-ups are included of various Finnish and American speakers.
