ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how hair-related items hairbands, hair scrunchies and shower caps can be used to help children's communication and language, maths and vocabulary. It includes familiar rhymes and activities using both the teacher's and child's creativity. Language and maths are important tools that allow humans to better understand the world around them, and communicate with one another. Many times children are taught to read and write mathematics before they understand the concepts. One way to help develop this understanding is to use visual, tactile and interesting materials such as hair scrunchies or hairbands, which will not only get the attention of children, but also keep their concentration. Very early in their school life, children are expected to be competent users of number lines of different types to help with mental calculation and therefore develop a mental image to carry with them throughout their subsequent years.
