ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concept of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in relation to animals. The critical role that DRR measures can play in delivering reduced vulnerability of animal and people populations. It explores the concept of sustainable capital, essential animal assets and business continuity for farm animal owners presented within the context of risk reduction for animals. The chapter looks at current successful government level strategies, pilot projects and the elements needs to build a disaster risk reduction plan for vulnerable animals. Many governments around the globe have already prepared their own organisational structures to reduce the human risk in emergency disasters operations. The UNISDR process involved in defining the Sendai Framework will offer valuable lessons on how to incorporate other sectors of society into the disaster risk reduction process, creating a culture of risk management, with accent on the farm animal sector: the farm animal industry, animal owners and animal health departments.
