ABSTRACT

The methodology consists of two components, programme development processes for vertical scaling-up towards institutionalisation and field activities for the improvement of community initiatives and horizontal spread. The original design and hypothesis underpinning the Stimulating Community Initiatives in Sustainable Land Management (SCI-SLM) methodology was field tested during the four years of the project. In Uganda, Promoting Farmer Innovation and Prolinnova were influential forerunners to the SCI-SLM project. The characterisation and validation process also strengthened the communities' understanding of the link and contribution of their innovations to sustainable land management. In Uganda, the SCI-SLM team also helped the NACIA community in identifying partners to enhance the horizontal spread of the tested techniques for rehabilitation of degraded rangelands. A total of 17 Bandera community members visited Soroti and Pallisa districts to learn about management of citrus orchards, and 14 members visited the NACIA community in Nakasongola district to learn about water harvesting.
