Journalists rely on independent thought to break news. No-one told Wilfred Burchett to travel 500 miles on a train packed with Japanese soldiers to see Hiroshima in 1945.1 He did it because as a war correspondent he knew the world needed a first-hand account of the horrors caused by a nuclear bomb.
