Let’s start by making one point clear. A media lawyer did not write this chapter. If you are in a mess or worried that you could be, the first rule of media law is to seek legal advice. This chapter is, however, informed by a wealth of experience as a crime reporter, having covered numerous difficult investigations stretching back to 1985.
