ABSTRACT

A historical overview of science in Early Years and primary education demonstrates how steps have been taken to introduce children to what is now a core curriculum subject. The status of science and the attitudes to the subject have, however, become less popular. Children appear to like science less than their predecessors and in England attitudes towards science fall below those of our European neighbours. Science is the foundation of our enlightened universe and the value of scientific literacy is growing in all aspects of modern culture. To ensure that children develop prerequisites for lifelong learning and employability in our rapidly evolving environment, understanding scientific concepts is essential.
