ABSTRACT

The author has been integrating the philosophy and practice of yoga with sustainability and justice in her teaching for the past several years. The Evergreen curriculum is always changing, but she carries the yoga and sustainability element into almost every academic program she teaches. Building skill and confidence in finding their way to stillness through meditation is very powerful for them. This is not to say that we focus only on individuals and their personal sustainability actions. Teaching sustainability studies from the inside out develops capacities inside each student for reflection, observing emotional responses, and finding capacity for joy and action in the midst of despair and grief. Students foster ongoing discernment processes to find balance, as well as observe contradictions in their own lives and in the political and cultural realms around them. Sustainability can come to include sustaining hope and trust in the face of what seem like overwhelming odds.
