ABSTRACT

A numinous building is a phenomenal construction that deals with the sacred dimension of inhabitation. The numinous manifests itself as a power or force, which is quite different from the forces of nature. Musical instruments, architectural forms, beasts of burden, even vehicles of transportation are numinous objects. A hierophany separates the things that manifest the numinous from everything else around them, because they embody the spirit and the power of transcendent beings. A beatific life can be had in numinous rooms. The main role of the art of building is to make our life congenial and satisfying, in other words, a vita beata. Numinous architecture increases the ability to invest in psychic energy and thereby fosters a vita beata. Architectural monsters, like celestial novelties, are untouchable sacred signs of possible building elements for future constructions that must be taken as prophecies against the conventional criticism of anointed and depressing design routines.
