ABSTRACT

The edifices in the constructed world are fabrics interwoven with dream stuff to form a latent presence. It is believed that architects turn an idea into a sensory phenomenon. On the contrary, they actually shape the sensory phenomenon into an idea. Architects don't open the doors for the spirit to enter everyday life with their dreams. Conversely, they elevate the mundane to a spiritual plane, to release the spiritual content of the physical reality. One cannot thematize architectural design procedures. They can only be represented by means of tropes and analogies. These procedures are fluid mental attitudes dwelling between the classical dichotomies of Western philosophy and the confused structure of image construction. The dream is the established locus of this condition between rationality and non-rationality. Designing architecture is akin to dreaming, however, dreaming is not like designing architecture.
