ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the readers to understand the electrical units of measurement associated with in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. The learning outcome is designed to test our knowledge of the various laws and documents relating to electrical equipment maintenance. For those readers without an electrical background, the chapter presents a common source of problems, often contributing to poor exam performance. There are a number of areas within the IET Code of Practice that provide information relating to the learning outcome. The IET Code of Practice lists and gives some information on the key statutory documents relating to portable appliance testing and expands on areas such as scope, responsibility and maintenance. The chapter presents the assessment criteria which provides good working knowledge of the standard units of measurement that might come across readers during portable appliance testing. The standard units of measurement relating to portable appliance testing are ampere (Current), volt (Voltage), ohm (Resistance), watt (Power) and hertz (Frequency).
