ABSTRACT
This chapter helps the readers to understand how to carry out combined inspection and testing. The learning outcome is specifically designed to test our knowledge of the various laws and documents relating to electrical equipment maintenance. There are a number of areas within the IET Code of Practice that provide information relating to the learning outcome. The IET Code of Practice lists and gives some information on the key statutory documents relating to portable appliance testing and expands on areas such as scope, responsibility and maintenance. The chapter provides assessment criteria for portable appliance testing: identifying tests that are suitable for the different types and classifications of in-service equipment, specifying how to carry out earth continuity testing and calculating the resistance of the flexible cable conductors and protective conductors. The IET Code of Practice lists two methods for carrying out an earth continuity test: the 'hard' test and the 'soft' test.
