ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the concepts and arguments that are pivotal to providing context to sexuality and ageing. It addresses the sexual rights of older people in different ways, from a range of disciplinary perspectives, and across heterosexual and non-binary gender and sexual identities. The book explores the ways that older heterosexual, gay, and bisexual men experience their sexuality. It highlights similarities and tensions among these groups to bring together an understanding within a 'common framework' of ageing, masculinities, and subjectivities. The book takes older transgender people as its focus and similarly notes the reduced support that comes from a lack of awareness and understanding. It argues that the cultural constructions of gender and older age position women as fragile and powerless. The book also addresses the increasing use of Internet dating sites by older people who wish to meet sexual and romantic partners.
