ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the evidence and developments in responding to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among older people, and the challenges in reducing STIs as well as fulfilling and enhancing the sexual rights of this group. The majority of social, behavioural and knowledge research into sexual behaviour and STIs has focused on adolescents. A major part of meeting older people's right to information and comprehensive education, and equitable access to the latest sexual health care, is to ensure available age-appropriate education and support for STI prevention. The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion identified health policy responses and an enabling environment as key components in the improvement of health. The 'Framework for Sexual Health Improvement in England' discusses sexual health across the lifespan. The chapter explores the challenges and opportunities for the prevention of STIs in older people through a multi-level approach involving policy, health and aged care services, community health promotion and research.
