ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the optimal functioning of human beings using strengths-based interventions in contrast to practitioners in the disciplines of positive psychology (PP) and applied sport psychology (ASP). It presents a case for this new strengths-based approach to enhancing human performance in golf and illustrates how such an approach can be introduced to leaders and policymakers, as well as to both coaches and golfers. Specifically, four applications of strengths-based interventions in golf are provided: a strengths-based debrief process, a strengths-focused golf game analysis, strengths-based questions for exploring a player's weaknesses and strengths, and strengths identification profiling. The purpose of the chapter was to adapt a strengths-based approach specifically to golf. Finally, the strengths-based approaches used in combination with the traditions of 'old school' methodologies to inform better and balance assumptions in the golf industry about how to motivate and inspire all participants.
