ABSTRACT

Chapter 10: Volunteering and Volunteer Drivers discusses volunteering as a general practice of individuals and groups around the world. Although individuals often engage in volunteering without benefit of an organized volunteer program, volunteering in the United States generally is organization-based. Although people of all ages volunteer, older adults volunteer in large numbers, especially older adults who have retired from the workplace. Volunteers can be difficult to recruit, but as was described in relation to recruiting volunteer drivers, often “once you have them, you have them!” The people who volunteer for senior driving programs are the key to the success of such programs.
