ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses problems in the English spelling system. It describes phonic approaches to teaching spelling. The chapter examines the place of word lists in teaching and learning spelling. It discusses the teaching of spelling rules and spelling principles. The chapter develops strategies for teaching and learning spelling. It describes ways of finding out what children know about spelling. The chapter suggests classroom activities to develop good spelling. It explores the components of a balanced approach to spelling, while drawing attention to some of the problems inherent in one spelling system and the obstacles these may place in the way of children's spelling development. The chapter also explores some practical activities that might be used in the classroom, or at home by parents and children, in order to ensure high standards in spelling and to make spelling interesting and enjoyable. It examines a range of strategies for developing children's spelling.
