ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates the sign structure as read in the perspective of the Object of Architecture (ObA). ObA is the physical level of architecture. ObA comes into being and gives Work of Architecture (WoA) a material ontology. The concept, or WoA, is however becoming all the way along its time-dimension. A purely aesthetic object, a work of art, is conceived in the consciousness of an artist. Consciousness belongs strictly to the present. 'Object of Architecture' refers to a definable physical objectivity, but not necessarily to one singular homogenous thing, like a house, a perimeter block, or a square. Form is that which is produced in the field of tension between idea and matter. Culture and civilization are such forms. Culture and civilization evolve with a certain regularity, and so does 'architecture'.
