ABSTRACT

Goals for identity development vary based on individualistic and collectivistic cultural orientations, and the saliency of one’s identities is impacted by environment and context. Adolescents form their identity based on social categories such as race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, ability status, socioeconomic status, and other domains. We review each domain along with models of cultural identity development. The chapter ends with a discussion of intersecting identities, double discrimination, and ways to support youth identity exploration and development. The chapter includes a vignette, reflective questions, suggestions for working with adolescents, and supplemental resources to promote critical thinking and multicultural competence.
