ABSTRACT

It would be lucky for Mrs Morris and myself if you go to Kelmscott in this week, for the Lechlade builder – who has taken time in making his estimate for the Cottages, has now sent it in. It is altogether disappointing; so much so, that till I have outside assistance in checking his and my calculations the ‘tender’ cannot be explained to Mrs Morris. As it now stands, Bowley’s offer could not be accepted. At present, I think he may have made gross mistakes; but from general examination I am inclined to believe he has put up the prices on all the many items, which is not an uncommon trick with builders who are not hard up for work to do.
