ABSTRACT

De Jong and Berg (2013, p. 20) suggest that if we want ‘to put clients into the position of being the experts about their own lives’, we need ‘to learn how to adopt a posture of not knowing ’.

From the moment I arrived in Asia from Latin America, I wanted to learn how to approach different cultures respectfully, in order to engage in positive relationships with people. ‘Not knowing’ was a reality for me. Later, through training in solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) and my early experiences working in the Singaporean educational system, this attitude became a tool ingrained in my practice.
