ABSTRACT

As a psychotherapist in private practice specialising in solution focused practice, I work extensively with students, parents and schools regarding school-based issues in Singapore. When students are referred by the school, it is very important to understand and manage the expectations of the school and the parents to support the desired changes in the student. I will share an example of a 6-year-old girl who was referred for ‘anger management’ by the school, and how a solution focused approach was utilised to work within the social system of the child to help support the necessary changes in a way that was respectful and realistic for all stakeholders. The example further illustrates the important steps for maximising cooperation and collaboration between all the parties involved.
