ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is organised into four main sections: Diversity, representation and community filmmaking; Networks and intermediaries in community filmmaking; community filmmaking: practices in place and for place; and Engagement and participation in community filmmaking. It looks at the role played by different groups of intermediaries and a diverse range of networks in facilitating the production and distribution of community films. It also looks at the practices of community filmmaking in various places as well as how community filmmaking can participate in the development of these places. The book considers the role of community filmmaking as a driver for engagement and participation. Community filmmaking has been used in policy interventions as an example of creative and cultural practice that can facilitate dialogue and community engagement.
