ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines housing intensification across three cities in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. It provides an international case study of three global cities in the context of the shared economy giant Airbnb. The book investigates the potential of geographic information systems applications to assist in identifying the optimal location and operation of retail destinations, including enclosed retail shopping centres. It presents a prototype spatial decision-support system which has been developed to support city-planners and policy-makers in understanding the potential land value uplift to property prices driven through new transport infrastructure. The book also examines the contribution of spatial characteristics including location when constructing a price index to analyse transactions of office buildings. It also presents an agent-based modelling approach for evaluating the economic feasibility of residential development proposals.
