ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the importance of communication within public organizations and the key concepts related to networking inside and outside public organizations. It examines how the advent of information and communication technology will bring advances to the operation of public organizations. The chapter explores two dimensions of communication: internal and external communications. Internal communication refers to the exchange of ideas and emotions among members within a given organization, while external communication deals with the channelling of interactions between an organization and its surrounding environment. External communication is often called public relations (PR). In real-life situations, efficiency and accuracy in communication is not always guaranteed because many factors tend to intervene, which might engender communication distortion along the process. Overcoming the barriers of geographical separation was made possible by the advent of new technologies, which has generated new horizons in organizational communication and networking.
