ABSTRACT

Organizational structure is important because different structures can result in different performance levels and outcomes. This chapter explains the importance of designing an organizational structure, and presents various types of organizational structure and criteria of departmentalizing organizations. It discusses whether different social problems have been caused by structural failures of public organizations. The formal, core structure of an organization relates to the degree of integrating individuals' works. There are four dimensions of an organization's structure that organizational scholars research: formalization, centralization, complexity and departmentalization. The best ways to understand an organization's structure is to use its organization chart. The organization chart consists of boxes and lines that reflect the division of labour among the members. It has been a common belief that an organization is likely to have a structure similar to a pyramid. A study of Korean government agencies found that the public organization structure in Korea resembles a rocket more than a pyramid.
