ABSTRACT

The final chapter first summarizes some of the remarkable political miracles that Taiwan has achieved over the last few decades. I will then consider the key challenges that face Taiwan’s democracy. Are we more likely to see a move towards a Singapore-style one-party dominant system? Or will Taiwan be able to regain its reputation as a model liberal democracy? I make some suggestions for how Taiwan can deal with these new and old challenges to its democracy. By the end of the book I hope I have done enough to convince you that Taiwan politics are worth studying.
