ABSTRACT

First and foremost, the need for leadership. In March, 1918, the war was nearly brought to an end. The great German offensive broke our line, or, at any rate, drove us back so far that it seemed that we might not be able to recover. The fault has not been so much in organization as in leadership. With divided counsels there was weakness and uncertainty. The whole situation teaches us the value of capable leadership. Whenever great schemes have been attempted, the success has depended on leadership, Take the work of Robert Owen, one of the great heroes of labour. Robert Owen goes out to America with his band of followers and establishes New Harmony. So long as Owen is there the place prospers. Owen comes away and dissentions break out, there is trouble and the experiment begins to decay.
