Avoid

but instead…

sitting yourself next to the pupil in class at all times

offering too close an oversight during breaks and lunchtimes

isolating the pupil by the positioning of any equipment

assuming that it is your responsibility to collect all equipment for the pupil

completing the task for the pupil

allowing inappropriate age behaviour, e.g. holding a pupil’s hand in the playground and the school

making unnecessary allowances for the pupil

keeping a pupil in at break and lunchtimes – unless there is specific guidance

making decisions for the pupil

preventing the pupil from taking the consequences of their actions

tolerating inappropriate behaviour such as bad language

work with other pupils, whilst keeping an eye on the pupil you are assigned to

foster peer group relationships, e.g. a buddy system, introduce games including other pupils

ensure the pupil is part of the working group

where appropriate, encourage the pupil to organise and be responsible for their own work materials – peer group help is acceptable, have equipment easily available

ensure that the work is the pupil’s, note the level of any adult input

give the minimum of physical assistance to ensure that the pupil is safe and can interact with peers

ensure that school rules apply to all

ensure that the pupil takes the opportunity to mix with friends, provide alternative activities with friends if indoor play is necessary

give the pupil the opportunity to make choices and decisions

insist that the pupil takes the responsibility for and the consequences of their actions

follow the school’s behaviour policy, ensure the pupil is expressing unacceptable behaviour due to other reasons, e.g. frustration at not joining in games etc
