ABSTRACT

Introduction The last three years have witnessed extensive discussions on the post-2015 international development agenda. Alongside the United Nations (UN)-led global consultations, several autonomous processes have provided key inputs to the global debates. These include institutional proposals (such as the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP); United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN); United Nations Global Compact (UNGC); and United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG)) and civil society contributions which have gradually shaped the future Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (SDSN, 2013; UNGC, 2013; United Nations, 2013a; UNSG, 2013). In September 2013, a special event by the UN General Assembly designed a roadmap towards the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. At this special session, world leaders advocated for an “inclusive and peoplecentred post-2015 development agenda,” calling for “a transparent intergovernmental process which will include inputs from all stakeholders including civil society, scientific and knowledge institutions, parliaments, local authorities, and the private sector” (United Nations, 2013b, 3).
