ABSTRACT

Why Southern Voice At the turn of the millennium, the most ambitious major innovation in international development was the unanimous adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. This set of goals, targets and indicators was purported to reflect a shared global vision for a world where the needs of all humans are both respected and promoted by national governments and the international community. Not long after, the MDGs became the blueprint for the work of government institutions, philanthropic organisations, multilateral institutions, and of course, the UN system as a whole.
