ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the process and decisions involved in treatment planning, which means reaching agreement with the client about the specific focus of our work together and the way we will work toward the desired goals. One of the most important issues regarding the frame and structure of treatment is the decision regarding the unit of treatment. Length of treatment can range from a few weeks to over a year, is often influenced by requirements of third-party funders, and may require periodic documentation of the client's status and progress. The task of developing treatment goals with a client can be difficult and overwhelming for beginning clinicians. Treatment goals for risk and safety concerns are usually related to additional resources and psychological support the client needs. In psychodynamic psychotherapy, there is explicit emphasis on supporting the client in developing internal capacities that lead to greater enjoyment and meaning in life.
