ABSTRACT

The SENCO and heads of department should share all relevant information about the pupils identified at primary school with all members of staff who work with the pupil. They should ensure that all staff are aware of what to look for if they have concerns about a pupil and dyslexia. The following information will help staff to identify and understand how the difficulties are likely to affect a pupil with dyslexia during lessons. Secondary staff need to look for and be aware of the cognitive difficulties dyslexic pupils may exhibit. They should also be aware that these ongoing difficulties can aggravate inappropriate behaviours and poor self-esteem. Strengths may include: spatial skills, creative, imaginative and practical skills, oral skills, verbal responses to questions showing good recall, sport or some types of sport. Oppositional, withdrawn or work avoidance behaviours can become more extreme in the secondary school setting. Confidence and self-esteem can also be affected.
