ABSTRACT

The multi-sensory Orton-Gillingham method underpinning traditional dyslexia programmes is as follows: The pupil looks at the letter on the card using their eyes. Traces over the letter with their fingers, saying the letter name aloud as they trace them in a cursive script. Toe by Toe is a highly structured multi-sensory reading manual for teachers and parents. It follows a systematic approach to reading. It teaches the phoneme by reading the phoneme in nonsense words then real words. High-frequency words are introduced throughout and are practised further at the sentence stage. Lexia is a computer-based programme that assists in the rapid acquisition of reading skills. Research is showing that pupils with dyslexia benefit from a multi-sensory approach to learning. The Hickey Multi-sensory Language Course published in 1977 and updated in 2000. Hickey is considered a classic in the field of dyslexia teaching having influenced every programme developed since up to Letters and Sounds.
