ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses for the future of US-Latin American relations. In contrast to imperialist rule, hegemony invites forms of resistance that track the powers that shape and reshape the interactions between the hegemon and its subordinates. It focuses on US hegemony was just that; it pertained to the power and position of the United States qua national actor in its relations with the nation-states of Latin America. Prior to the end of the Cold War, Paul Kennedy's bestseller The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers stimulated interest in the relative decline of the United States, as brought about by 'imperial overstretch'. Assuming China emerges as a truly global power, the scope of its interests in the Western hemisphere may expand, potentially leading to heightened tensions, particularly if it views itself as a peer competitor to the United States.
