ABSTRACT

This chapter recaps the grammar taught at key stage 2 before exploring ways of building on and extending pupils’ knowledge of grammar at key stages 3 and 4. It suggests ways of addressing gaps in pupils’ knowledge as well as ways of applying their knowledge about grammar to reading and writing. The chapter covers verb forms and tense, including finite, non-finite and modal verbs; nouns and noun phrases, including nominalisation, gerunds, expanded noun phrases, noun phrases in apposition and nominal clauses; relative clauses, including defining, non-defining and sentential relative clauses; non-finite clauses; conditional clauses, including the subjunctive form; the passive voice; multi-clause sentences; sentence variety; narrative voice and viewpoint; style; and structure and cohesion.
