ABSTRACT

This chapter exposes the reader to the Ability Studies field, by discussing how we teach, what we teach and whom we teach, with a special emphasis on the interrelationship between Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and ability expectations. It outlines the concepts of ability expectation and ableism and the academic field of Ability Studies, and the latter’s linkage and difference to Disability Studies. The chapter examines various aspects and areas of education through an Ability Studies lens and focuses on the impact of the ability expectations associated with STEM on education. However from an Ability Studies perspective, education-related ability expectations and forms of ableism are not only evident in regards to disabled people but ability expectations and forms of ableism are a general aspect of the education system. The chapter entices the reader to look at the world through the lens of ability expectations and engage with the concept of ability expectation governance.
