ABSTRACT

Throughout the 2015 Australian Football League (the AFL) season Adam Goodes, an elite Sydney Swans (Swans) footballer, was subject to sustained booing and vitriolic abuse from opposition team supporters. Goodes, an Aboriginal Adnyamathanha man, 1 is a highly decorated player who has twice been the recipient of the Brownlow Medal, 2 twice a Swans premiership player and their game play record-holder (Adair 2015). Goodes is also a four-time All-Australian AFL team member, a member of the Indigenous Team of the Century, and has represented Australia in the International Rules Series (Australian of the Year Awards 2015).
