ABSTRACT
There is a great deal of enthusiastic experimentation in the region around the Liberal Arts and cross-disciplinary undergraduate education. Liberal Learning in the laboratory that Hong Kong is neither a return to a nostalgic past nor a packaged survey of current knowledge. As colleges and universities in the United States continue to suffer from the devastation of the financial crisis and a retreat from the Liberal Arts tradition, different sites in Asia are making a very different set of decisions. As one of the primary sites for Liberal Learning, General Education—as people rethink it and work to rename it—can best be thought of as a cluster of skills of making, habits of collaborative and individual curiosity, and a capacity for invention that is contextualized by the strife and possibility offered by globalization, technocapital, local currencies, and the continuing need for an ethic of the social good.
