ABSTRACT

The identification, recruitment and engagement of stakeholders are key to participatory evaluation. The objectives of the evaluation are set collectively through dialogue at the preparation and planning stage, and aim to satisfy the needs of all stakeholders. Clarifying and articulating purpose of the evaluation requires skilful facilitation if it is to create an environment for shared interactive learning. Articulating the value of participatory evaluation to each group of stakeholders is key to engagement. The process of thinking about change and how it is achieved supports the development and communication of a shared understanding. Developing a shared understanding and a common language between stakeholders is essential to ensuring that the contribution that youth work makes to the improvements in outcomes for young people, is recognised and valued. Evaluations should be realistic and practical, completed in a timely and cost-efficient manner and conform to conventionally accepted standards of behaviour and ethics.
