ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a range of methods most usually associated with participatory evaluation. Designing a questionnaire can be challenging; this is particularly so when it is aimed at generating data with young people. Questionnaires can be used to generate both quantitative and qualitative data depending on the question type. Interviews are a popular form of data generation in participatory evaluation as they enable the exploration of complex social and political processes, such as why and how change has occurred. The decision about whether to use individual interviews or group interviews must be informed by the context, the topic, the preference of participants and the skill level of the interviewer. Observation is a widely used means of data generation, and it involves more than 'just looking' in that it entails looking and recording systematically. Highly-structured observations generate quantitative data in the form of a numerical summary of the presence or frequency of a range of predetermined incidences.
