ABSTRACT

Many safety professionals spend their whole careers trying to find the silver bullet' to overcome inaction towards safety and get extremely frustrated when they fail to do so. The first and absolutely critical step to overcoming inaction is to know audience and the place they are in. Even in the most unengaged organisation there will always be some people who are interested in health and safety. A safety professional wanted to develop a programme to help delivery drivers improve their situational awareness when they deliver to a site, in order to help tackle an increasing accident trend in the organisation. An organisation underwent a structural change where their safety professionals reported into the operational line rather than to a central team. The safety profession does tend to suffer from a stigma of being very anal and have a clipboard and cagoule approach.
