ABSTRACT

The climate towards safety is changing and recent changes in legislation, coupled with the drive to be seen to be doing the right things, means that more and more business leaders and senior managers want to do something in this area. This chapter explores some simple yet game-changing things that business leaders and senior managers can do to help improve their organisation's safety performance and culture. As each organisation is set up differently, it is difficult to suggest who exactly should sit on the steering group. They are recommended along with a safety professional: operations director, HR director, sales director, financial controller, property manager, regional manager. There are many different ways to report safety performance and each organisation will have developed its own tools to do so. Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) ownership needs to be aligned with each business leader's area of responsibility with a highly visible safety team to support it.
