ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the work of the Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park (‘the Friends’) and their experience of converting the eponymous cemetery into a park. The wooded nature of the park offers a dramatic contrast to the highly urban surroundings on the fringe of the City of London. The Friends have carefully cultivated this woodland character and created a place that is ecologically and socially significant, providing a place of rest, education and recreation, as well as a setting for multiple community events. The project is also notable for its inclusive management style and range of opportunities for people to participate in the use and management of the park.
