Thomas Ballantyne (1806-1871), whose Passages Selected from the Writings of Thomas Carlyle: With a Biographical Memoir is the occasion of this review, was a member of the original company that formed the Leader, though that partnership had long been dissolved by the time George Eliot's notice was written.
