ABSTRACT
Organized sport emerged at a particular historical moment in the West—a time in which society was gradually recognizing that homosexuality existed as an immutable, unchangeable characteristic, and a time in which women were beginning to campaign for equality. This led to a turn-of-the-twentieth-century moral panic, when society feared that young men were becoming weaker, softer, more feminine and, thus, homosexual.
